[…] Vad du ärvde av din mamma. Vad hon ärvde av sin. Inget av det har egentligen något värde. Inte ens ett sentimentalt. Du rensar bort allt du inte vet priset på. Det är legitimt att bränna det som är brännbart, att sortera glas, plast och metall. Ett liv är till slut summan av sina ägodelar. Och på samma sätt kommer du att bli summan av dina ägodelar och jag av mina. Panorera över platserna du bott på, alla saker som knöt dig fast i tillvaron. Nu är både du och jag så gamla som vi är. Eftersom vi lever och de döda inte gör det är vi ändå bättre än de. De har blivit en sorts förlorare.

[…] What you inherited from your mother. What she inherited from hers. None of it has any true value. Not even a sentimental one. You clear away everything you don’t know the price of. It is legitimate to burn that which is combustible, to recycle glass, plastic and metal. In the end, a life is the sum of its possessions. In the same way you will be the sum of yours and I of mine. Pan across the places you’ve stayed, all the things that kept you fastened to life. Now you and I are as old as we are. Because we are living and the dead are not, we are still superior to them. They have become losers of a sort.
